E-Mail Report

Saw this in an e-mail from Iron & Air magazine - bobber that started life as a '68 Triumph Daytona 500. Many moons ago, buying one of these was my fondest wish. My Harley Sprint had been stolen and I was looking for a replacement. The local Triumph dealer had a 500 on the showroom floor but I didn't have enough money to swing it. I talked to my dad and he made it quite clear I needed to buy a car rather than another motorcycle.

While I really dig the look of the bobber, this is what a stock '69 Daytona looked like. Most people in this day and age would think of a 500cc bike as a beginner's or a chick bike, the biggest bike Triumph ever made up to that time was a 650. A couple of years later they brought out a 750 Bonneville and the 750 Trident. Most of the other British bikes - Enfield, Norton, Matchless, BSA - were 750cc or under as well. I'd love to have that lovely green one, even 50 years later.

About the same time I was drooling over the Daytona 500, there was Linda Vaughn appearing in all the car mags. 39-26-37 was just the thing to command a young man's attention. Miss Hurst Golden Shifter is being honored at the Daytona Motorsports Hall of Fame, according to an e-mail I received from Vintage Motorsport magazine. They had a photo of her in the e-mail and she doesn't look too bad yet to this day. Especially considering she's 80 years old. While Farah Fawcett posters were on the wall of a lot of young men's bedrooms, the young hot rodders all had photos of Linda Vaughn hanging in the garage.

Looked at the logistics of picking up the quick-change on the way home from the Grand Canyon if we decide to go. It wouldn't be much of a detour, actually. Maybe only 3-4 hours added on to the trip. Unfortunately, nothing in stock, and no telling when they'll be getting one in. Because of that, I think I'm going to make up a mock-up rear so I can set the location of the spring and radius rods. I'll be able to get the tires under it and check the ride height and the rake towards the front, as well as be able to roll it around. I can use a piece of pipe running inside a couple of bored out pipe couplings placed where the spring hanger and radius rods should go, then weld a plate on each end of the pipe to bolt the wheels up to. Even though the pipe I've got is smaller than the quick-change tubes, if everything is where it should be, all I'll have to do later on is just open up the radius on the brackets to suit.

Header's About Done

I ground the welds inside the tube to flange joints. I put a taper on them for decent flow from the head. No port matching or anything on this rig but since I'm going from a rectangular hole in the head to a round tube, the taper should work well enough. Certainly shouldn't be any worse than the stock manifold. I'm about 90 percent on sending it out for the Jet Hot treatment. It won't be cheap, but at this point the jitney project has become something like a federal government project with the cost overruns.

Cuzzin Ricky and I have been talking over a trip to the Grand Canyon. The train trip west would be about the same scheduled time as our trip out to Salt Lake City a couple of years back. However, on the return trip you need to take a 15-minute bus ride, then a 40-minute van ride, then hang around the station for over 8 hours and then catch the train at 4:20 in the morning for the ride home. A little over 43 hours total. I don't think so. I need to look at the atlas and if we were to drive, maybe stop by Speedway Motors and pick up a quick-change rear on the way home. That would be sweet.

Tee Shirt Tuesday #48

Group ride with Surly and the grandsons. This one's from 2016 - I've got one from 2018 in the tub as well. Probably should have put both of them up since I'm going to be calling it quits on the tee shirt posts when I hit 52. One year is enough even though I've still got a few more I could post.

The header's almost done. I need to do a little more welding on the tube to flange connections and weld the collector to the flange. I bolted the header to the motor to get the flange squared up. I'll finish weld everything today and then maybe get a start on the trailer project as long as the weather is co-operating.

Marty Robbins' birthday yesterday - he would be 97 if he was still kicking. Talented guy. Even drove a stock car. In fact, he had 36 NASCAR starts. His career highlights can be seen here. He's always been one of my favorites.

Heard It Through The Grapevine

I did my 5K yesterday morning. There wasn't a walking class but there were a couple of fast runners in my age group, so no medal, but I wasn't really looking for one. Last week was a fluke.

The Missus and I went out for a late lunch Friday after meeting with the financial guy. there's a new restaurant a few miles away, but since covid isn't much of a concern for either of us now, we tried it out. It was good to take the old girl for a ride in the country and eat out. When we came home the road was blocked on the corner leading into our lane due to an accident. One of the vehicles was on the flatbed getting hauled away, one was completely off the road in the ditch and there was another one parked in the lane. I know the driver of the flatbed, but don't know if his outfit hauled the one out of the ditch or not. I can't imagine they did, because when I came home from the run there was still dirt, gravel, car parts and a couple of short broken chunks of 2x4 in the road. I went down with a shovel and a broom and got it taken care of. After which I picked the last of the grapes, hence the song selection, and then trimmed up some tree branches infringing on the lane. It's just about picking time, so I needed to make room for the picker.

I also started on cleaning up the flower beds and correcting some of the "landscape" that I've neglected this year. The lilac bush is blooming again while most of the leaves are drying up and falling off. Not something seen often around here.

The only welding left on the jitney header is joining the tubes to the flanges - maybe get that finished up today. Definitely planning on doing some more yard work, however. Looks like we've got a nice week ahead of cool sunny days. Better take advantage of it.

Header Progress

I finish welded most of the tube joints on the header yesterday. I'll finish the rest up today. Some of the welds look a bit sloppy, but I'm going to grind, sand and file until they all look good. I went to Harbor Freight on Wednesday to get the little pneumatic belt sander they sell, but just my luck, the store I went to had just sold the last one. I might try going to another store this weekend and picking one up. The lady at the original store told me the other stores had them in stock.

I contacted Jet Hot to get a quote on getting it coated. Surprisingly enough in this day of lousy service, they got back to me right away. They've got several different options, none of them are cheap, but if I get all the welds cleaned up well, their Classic Polish finish should look really good when bolted up to the old Slant Six - shine like a diamond in a pig's ass.

I've got another meeting with the financial guy today. He's supposed to have some ideas and some numbers for me. I think what I should have done before starting the jitney project was get it a Social Security number and claimed it as a dependent. I had a fairly good idea what this project was going to cost me but I hadn't banked on the inflation factor. However, with the way things are going, might just as well spend the money since every day now it's worth less. Thank you so much you beautiful people in the District of Criminality.

Big changes in the weather this week. A couple of days in the nineties, followed by a couple in the sixties. I'm doing another 5K in the morning. They're calling for a slight chance of rain, which means it will probably be cloudy and cool. Perfect weather, as long as the rain doesn't develop. This one will be in a large cemetery. Should be fun.

Photo Dump

I went over yesterday to help my boss at the side gig get the legs I made for him installed onto the live edge slabs. The job went smoothly enough. I had to stand around for a bit while he made a hardware run, but it was a beautiful morning to be out, not so much later when it got up to 92. I only bought one pack of leveling feet when I was making the legs, so this table doesn't have those underneath them. It's a shame that the slab developed a split on the one end. The black walnut is really pretty.

A couple of Maserati engine pics. If I ever became filthy rich, I think I'd like to have a Maserati parked in the garage next to my XKE.

This guy ran in the same event I did on Sunday. He ran either in the 10K or the half marathon dressed as a boxer in order to qualify for a record in the Guiness Book of Worlds Records. He even had his hands wrapped inside the gloves. There was another guy who ran the same event in pajamas. Both of them set unofficial records, so they eventually should be in the Guiness book. I had no idea there was a category for that kind of stuff, but I'm glad they both set records. Neither one of them was a young guy, either.

Just a little inspiration from one of the trips Cuzzin Ricky and I took. We should be on our way to the Grand Canyon one of these days before too much longer as long as Amtrak doesn't go on strike. It'll be good to be on the move once again and see one of the nature's marvels.

Tee Shirt Tuesday #47

From the Steel Wheels tour '89 according to the shirt. My nephew got four tickets for the stop in Indy and Surly and I were able to go. The seats were dead center of the stage, four rows back. Living Color was the opening act and we got to see the lead singer fall off the stage. He climbed back up and kept going - hardly missing a beat. Excellent show by both groups, but there's only one Rolling Stones. '89 was 33 years ago now but I've still got the tee shirt and the tinnitus for a souvenir.

One of the best from the "World's Greatest Rock 'N' Roll Band".

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I came across a post by Ron Paul addressing the issue of the educational outcomes as a result of the cooties paranoia of the last couple of years. Partly as a result of that, there has been an increase in the number of parents homeschooling their children. Seems Ron Paul has a home-schooling curriculum now. I took a brief look at it. Not having perused it in depth, I can't fully recommend it. However, if I was looking for a home-schooling curriculum for elementary or high school students, I think I'd start with that one.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got the holes cut out in the collector yesterday and got it tacked on to the tubes. I cut the holes with the plasma cutter and then dressed them with the die grinder - went pretty quick even though I'm still not very steady when cutting thin sheet metal with the plasma. It just cuts faster than I can move smoothly.

I've got a couple of other things to do today but I'm planning on getting some more welding done on the header.

Better Than I Expected

I didn't expect to come home with anything other than sore feet yesterday, but I was the second place finisher in my age group. Of course there were only two of us in that category. They didn't have a specific category for walkers, but the other guy was a walker also. I've run up against this guy several times in the past. I beat him a couple of times and he's beat me a couple. Race etiquette says walkers should start from the back of the pack, but he always starts up front. He finished 4 minutes ahead of me, so even if we had started dead even, he would have beaten me. When I looked up our times after I got home, his age was listed as 83! Pretty impressive.

I finished up all the tube work on the jitney header after coming home. I'll see about punching the holes in the collector, getting the flange on it and then tacking the tubes on today. I'm diggin' how it looks.

I Just Wasn't Made For These Times

This is a cut from the Pet Sounds album by the Beach Boys. I had an eight track of this I used to play in my '62 Chevy back in the day. The album was much different than the normal Beach Boys sound of Surf music. It didn't receive much critical acclaim when it came out but later on it was hailed as one of the greatest albums of all times. I don't know if I'd go that far, but supposedly it was the precursor to the psychedelic stuff, and I was a big fan of that.

Exhibit A: all 11 minutes of it.

And you can't forget Vanilla Fudge. One look at the album cover and your "soul will be psychedelicized" as well.

Great times growing up back then. With a war going on and riots in the streets, it might not have been the best of times for a lot of people, but looking back, my life was A-OK. I sure as shit wouldn't want to do it over again. Since my world view was pretty limited at that age, I didn't have much of a grasp or concern for things that didn't directly concern me. Mostly my main concerns were motorcycles, cars and girls - pretty much in that order. Fifty-some years later, one girl and family, motorcycles, cars and general pissing around with making things and traveling. And since the covid panic has burned itself down to coals, Cuzzin Ricky and I are in the planning stages of a train trip - praise the Lord and pass the ammunition! The clock's winding down. We're both already in the 4th quarter. Time to get back in the game.

I'm doing a 5K this morning. Not trying to be competitive. Mostly just keeping my running buddy company while she does a 10K. There's another 5K coming up in a couple of weeks as a fundraiser. No timing on this one at all. However, since it's in her back yard and for a good cause, if she wants to do it, I'm in. Maybe actually train for the Thanksgiving 5K I normally do. That might be it for my race-walking career after that. Just walk for the exercise value and the enjoyment of meeting up with the regular tribe on our Sunday walks and hikes. Maybe devote some more energy to my cycling next year and try to find something else to maintain my physical and mental health. These last few years have really "harshed my mellow", as the old hippies used to say. Maybe all I really need to get my groove back on is get to a couple of open wheel races - smell the alcohol, get beaned with a few dirt clods and eat a pork tenderloin sandwich. I had my chance yesterday when Cuzzin Ricky called me. He was heading to a midget race at a local track but I was in the middle of a repair job on a window, and I was going to have to get up early this morning, so I took a pass.

I finished the tube on #3 cylinder yesterday. Next up, fab up the turnouts on the two remaining cylinders, punch some holes in the collector and tack the flange on the end. After that, lots of welding. I bought a kit of magnetic holders after I retired from the high school since I didn't have access to a third hand like I used to. However, it would be nice if one of the items was a piece of angle with magnets sunk down in it. It would make aligning tubes together much easier, at least on the straight sections.

In addition to working on the header, I dug out the hammered dulcimer I made years ago. It was missing one of the bridge blocks, but not any longer. I need to find the manual I used to construct the dulcimer. It's got tuning info and sheet music for a couple of easy tunes. I made the thing for my wife but that didn't go anywhere. I'm thinking maybe fooling around with it this winter.

In the meantime, in between time, work on the jitney, and get some work done around the shack and enjoy the weather. We're heading into the best time of the year. Need to enjoy while I can.

Getting Closer

Didn't get a lot done yesterday. Wednesday afternoon late, I felt like I was coming down with covid again. Muscle aches, sore throat, headache. It woke me up about 2:00 in the morning. I took a covid test later in the morning and no covid. I think I had a combination of allergies, sinus something and sore muscles from the work and training I've been doing. I felt better later in the day yesterday, so I moseyed out to the shop, did some clean-up work, a bit of machining and then fit another tube for the header. Got some running around to do today, so don't know what I'll get done on the header but I'd like to get at least a little more done.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting article about EVs here. Lots of info presented that covers the downside of electric vehicles that you never hear in the sales pitch.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow's Constitution Day. It'd be a good day to reflect on where we came from, where we are and where we're headed in this country. Personally, I think the country would be in much better shape if the knuckleheads in Washington actually used the Constitution to guide their actions - that and stop spending money like a bunch of drunken sailors.

Emergency Call Out

When banks foreclosed on mortgages, neighbors would show up and bid a penny on each item. After winning, they would pay the penny and leave the items in the possession of the original owner. Outsiders who attempted to bid more than a penny had "problems" and soon stopped attending these auctions.

I saw the above at Eaton Rapids Joe. I had heard of this before but I wonder if there will be a resurgence of this kind of thing on the horizon, what with all the foreclosures coming. The local paper had a big list of foreclosures and tax sales recently. I haven't heard much about this issue on any of the mainstream news sources but I don't pay much attention to them, anyway. I have noticed that when one of the local farmers retires/goes out of business, the other farmers usually show up and bid the prices up or buy something to help the guy out.

I met with the financial guy again yesterday morning with the goal of figuring out how to avoid the 50% penalty on my Required Minimum Distributions and where to put that money that might be able to at least think about keeping up with the inflation rate. Not sure how that's going to work out but when you hit 72, has to be done.

After the meeting I made a few other stops, came home and had a bite to eat and about the time I was heading to the shop I got a phone call from the guy with the Ranger I repaired. He had a tire repairman working on his big front-end loader and they broke a cap on the wheel where the filler valve goes. There are two 1-1/4" pipe nipples side by side on the wheel, only one of which is necessary to inflate the tire, so he wanted me to weld the other side closed. He found a plug that was just about a perfect size to plug the hole, so I drove it in and then welded around it. Even though I put two passes on it, I got a couple of pinholes in the weld, so the tire guy let the air out of the tire and I washed another pass over it. Not that big of a job, but with the travel time and getting it fixed, by the time I got home I decided to take care of a couple other things instead of working on the header. I'll get back on that job again today.

Going out to breakfast with Cuzzin Ricky and TVI this morning and then picking up some steel for the job for the Missus. I want to finish the header for the jitney before starting anything else, however. I don't want it to rust, so finish weld it, clean it up and then get it painted with some high temp paint of some sort.

Tee Shirt Tuesday #46

I picked this one up at the Peoria TT when Surly and I went there a few years back. As you can tell from the back of the shirt, they've been running the event for quite a long time. I've only been there the one time, should have gone over there when I was a young man. The bikes now are modified motocross bikes. Back in the day there would have been BSA, Triumph, Norton and HD ridden by my motorcycle heroes - guys like Dick Mann, Gary Nixon, Alex Jorgenson, George Roeder, Mert Lawill and all the rest. No real reason I never made it over there back then. It's not all that far. Surly and I drove over the day before, spent the night, watched the event and then came home that evening. Nice weekend.

Going along with that, I never went to Santa Fe Speedway back in the day when they had motorcycle flat track races. I did make it over there several times for World of Outlaws sprint cars. They started running flat track races at the Action Track in Terre Haute a few years back. About the time I was figuring on going, the covid hit and that was that. In fact, Cuzzin Ricky and I haven't been to the races for three years now. No way to spend our retirements.

I need to make the last tube for cylinder #3 and the curved connectors for the other two tubes and that'll be about all for the fabricating. I'll have to punch holes in the collector and then do a lot of welding. That'll take some time but it should look good when it's all finished. I might buy myself one of those little belt sanders to dress up the welds. Harbor Freight has a pneumatic one with 3/8" wide belts for only $24.99. There's been plenty of times I could have used one. I'll have to decide what I'm going to use for a finish on the header after I get it cleaned up. It'll start rusting pretty quick - don't want that.

Bike Ride & Another Header Tube

Took the bicycle out for a ride yesterday morning. I haven't been riding much due to the county covering up my favorite smooth pavement with the chip and seal. I drove down the roads the other day to check the condition and with the hot weather and traffic, most of the chips have been either pushed down into the asphalt underneath or thrown off to the side. It's not smooth like it used to be but it's rideable now. I got 9 miles in. There's a car show this morning about 10 miles away. I might ride the bike over and check it out since the road's now smooth enough to ride on a skinny tired bike without a struggle or getting beaned with a piece of gravel kicked up by a passing vehicle

The view down the lane. Makes for a nice start and finish for a bike ride. Won't be much longer and the corn will get picked. Not near as scenic with corn stubble for about 8 months. It's much noisier as well. The corn looks good, in spite of the dry weather we've had off and on this summer. Much better than many of those poor farmers out west.

I got another tube mostly made up on the jitney header. I still need to fit up the curve on the end of the tube where it meets the collector. Might get that done today depending on whether I go to the car show and the gym.

I took another look at the old boat trailer. I'm going to drag it out and start doing some of the fabricating. It won't take too much to get that part done. The rest I can do after the weather turns. I got my extra propane cylinder topped off the other day, so I should have enough gas to last me the winter now. If I finish the jitney, the trials bike and the trailer, I'll have a productive winter.

Harvest moon time of the year again. Beautiful night to see it last night - cloudless sky, cool temperatures. Life's good out in the country.

The box of parts to finish the header showed up yesterday afternoon. Another piece of tubing, flanges to bolt the header to the collector, gaskets for same, and some heat wrap to protect the alternator and starter motor. I picked up the tubing for the tail pipe yesterday, also. Now it's just a matter of picking away at it, little by little.

Wake Up

I received a text yesterday morning from my running buddy about a bicycle ride. It's a 50 miler we did last year that's coming up in October. I'm assuming she wants to do it again, so I got the bike out and rode uptown to the auto parts store to get my tailpipe tubing for the jitney ordered. I haven't been out on the bike since they covered my favorite road close to the house with tar and chips. The trip uptown was only seven miles round trip but legs felt good. Long way from 50 but I've got a month to train. Felt good getting out on the bike again.

On my ride I noticed a new sign out by the road - Wake Up. This same guy has an Infowars, Gadsen and US flag hanging on a pole in his yard. I don't know the guy but I'm pretty sure I know his politics.

I finish welded the collector but I'm about out of argon. I should have enough to weld in the curved piece coming off the tube from cylinder #6 to the collector, so that's up next. In addition to the argon tank, I need to get a propane tank filled up, get some chicken feed, make a grocery run, pick some grapes, and mow the back yard. Lots going on as always but I'm making progress on the jitney, so it's all good.

Tee Shirt Tuesday #45

Twenty years old and still in the rotation. This is from a local event that I ran or race walked several times. I imagine 20 years ago I was still running. I'm not sure when I started race walking. I started the blog in 2008, so no help from the archives. The shirts held up well, though. There's a couple of grease spots on the front but the collar's not all frayed. I think that's because it's green - not really a fan of green shirts.

Paper pattern to check fit and size before making the real one. I made a layout on the bench top first. First step was determine the circumference of both ends, then lay out the lines for the length and sides equidistant from the center line. I then double checked things by actually doing the layout for a truncated cone. That gave me the required arcs for the ends. I transferred the layout to a piece of pattern paper, rolled it up to check the sizes and then stuck it on the #1 cylinder tube to see how it was going to look on the car.

I transferred the paper pattern to the sheet metal, cut it out and then made a "joggle" along one edge. Rolling the cone was a little difficult. The 16 gauge is pretty stiff and the small end is smaller in diameter than the rolls on my roller. Plus, in spite of the fact it's a slip roller, I've never had much luck getting the sheet to slip properly so both ends roll evenly. The joggle on the one side is to allow me to lap the ends rather than trying to butt weld the seam. I ended up with a couple of dents while squeezing it together that I'll need to planish out but that shouldn't be a problem.

I'll get the seam welded up today and see for sure if I've got enough bends to finish the job. I think I might have to buy one more U-bend. If so, I'll order a couple of plates and gaskets to join the collector to the tailpipe while ordering.

Let's Drink to The Hard Working People

Let me raise a glass to all you hard working men and women keeping us safe and the wheels of commerce turning. I salute each and every one of you.

------------------------------------------

I got the tube for the #1 cylinder fit up yesterday. Now comes the fun part - making the collector and filling in the remaining tubes. Even though it's the working man's holiday, I might see about rolling up the collector today.

Header Progress Plus

Interesting day yesterday - I started off the day reading this week's The Epoch Times Opinion section. An article addressing America's Standing Army detailed how well armed many of the various departments of the federal government are: "The IRS has stockpiled 4,500 guns and 15 million rounds of ammo, the Department of Veterans Affairs has purchased 11 million rounds, The department of Health and Human Services has acquired 4 million rounds in addition to 1,300 guns, the Social Security Administration has secured 800,000 rounds of ammunition as well as armor and guns," with more at other departments. Something to think about right there.

And then came a knock on the door and it was a pair of Jehovah's Witnesses. Nice people but I'm always surprised when they show up since I'm way off the beaten path. Especially when there's corn on both sides of the lane like there is now. I'm not sure how I feel about the government agents arming up against its citizens, especially after Slo-Joe's satanic address to the nation, and how the message of the Jehovah's Witnesses fits with everything going on presently or on tap for the future.

Went to the gym later on. I've got a long road back to where I was a couple years ago. I did 3 rounds on the double-end bag, 3 on the heavy bag, but could only do 2 rounds on the speed bag. All were three-minute rounds. Did some core exercises as well but nothing like I used to do. Besides the fact of the covid keeping me away from the gym, turned 72 today so that might have something to do with it.

I did get back out into the shop after coming home from the gym. I got the stub tubes fit up to the flange for the first three cylinders. Next step is to get the tube for #1 cylinder tacked together. After that I can pull a line to line up all the remaining tubes and make the collector. That's going to take some time but I'll keep pecking away at it.

My goal was to have the jitney as a roller by Labor Day. Between the wife and I getting covid and the problem getting the rear end, I didn't make it but I have been making progress. I could have spent more time on it but I should be able to get it finished by next spring. Same with the vintage trials bike. The Missus asked about me making her something the other day. I'll have to get on that one of these days before too much longer. Always something.

Header Progress 2

I didn't spend a lot of time in the shop yesterday, but I got a decent start on making the header tubes. I spent some time in the morning trying to locate the remaining tubing I need. The auto parts store I usually do business with can get the tube but it comes in 10' lengths. I checked Speedway Motors and they've got what I want but shipping is $43.00 dollars - just a dollar less than the cost of the tubing. I've decided to get the stuff locally. It'll cost me about the same as Speedway but I'll get twice as much tubing. I might be able to use the extra someday.

The U-bends showed up yesterday, so I've got enough to get a good start on the job now. It's supposed to hit 90 degrees today - just a couple more than yesterday. I'm certainly not a big fan of the hot days, but I'll try and get at least the tube for cylinder #1 tacked together. I'll then know where the collector should be located and can make that. After that, just fill in the rest of the tubes and make the tailpipe.

Header Progress

The exhaust tubes need to stay close to the bottom of the intake in order to clear the starter. I'm going to tack a piece of angle iron 6-1/2" above the height of the frame rail that I'll use to support the outboard ends of the tubes. The tube coming from cylinder # 1 will have a 90 degree bend on the end of it and will get welded directly to the small end of the collector. The remaining tubes will have a bend on the end and will get welded into the side of the collector. I've decided on the big end of the collector being 3" in diameter. I'll make a couple of flanges that will bolt the 3" straight pipe to the collector. The aft end of the straight pipe will have a bologna slice on the end or a turn-out. Hidden muffler inside the pipe, a rubber mount for the aft end of the pipe, and Bob's your uncle. I should have put a little more thought into the whole operation before I ordered the tubing. I could have ordered the 3" tube and a piece of 1-1/2" straight tube and saved some shipping expense. I probably can get those locally, however.
